In this article, experiments and theories concerning to serotonin and the mechanisms of sleepwakefulness, are described in a historical perspective and neurophysiologic mechanisms responsible of the onset of slow-wave sleep and the role of serotoninergic system are discussed.

Bu yazıda serotonin ve uyku-uyanıklık mekanizmalan arasındaki ilişkilere ait deney ve teoriler tarihsel gelişimine uygun olarak geniş bir perspektif ile aktarılmaya çalışılmış, yavaş uykunun başlatılmasından sorumlu mekanizmalar ve serotoninerjik sistemin rolü ile ilgili kavramlara ana hatları ile değinilmiştir.
