Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) widely used drug for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. Although SSRIs are known as safety drugs, some case reports and studies associate SSRIs with increased risk of bleeding events. Sertraline causes a decrease in platelet serotonin leading to a defect in platelet aggregation. This depletion of serotonin can potentially lead to a higher risk of bleeding. In this report we will discuss a case, who has depression and vaginal hemorrhage due to sertraline treatment, is reported for its rare occurrence.
