Objective: In this study, we aimed if there is an effect of smoking upon the treatment response of antipsychotics and side effects of drugs in the acutely hospitalized chronic schizophrenic patients.
Method: Fourty five patients in patients, diagnosed by DSM-IV criteria as schizophrenia who are in acute exacerbation was included in this study. The information of these patients’ cigarette smoking habits with the sociodemographical and clinical features was assessed by a inquiry form. The patients divided into three subgroups according to their smoking habits. Barnes akathisia, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Extrapyramidal Symptoms Rating Scale (ESRS) applied to them at first and the 15th day of the treatment.
Results: There were no differrences established with the Barnes, BPRS, and dyskinesia scales between the groups. But the parkinsonism scores in the nonsmoker group were higher than smoker group.
Conclusions: Results were in accordance with the literatures about the parkinsonism due to antipsychotics was found to be less in the smoker patients and it would be a necessary to do same study with a greater sample group.
Şizofrenili hastalarda sigara içiminin antipsikotik tedavi etkinliği ve ilaç yan etklileri üzerine etkisi
Amaç: Bu çalışmada akut olarak hospitalize edilmiş kronik şizofren hastalarda, sigara içiminin antipsikotik tedaviye cevap ve antipsikotik ilaç yan etkileri üzerine etkisinin olup olmadığının saptanması amaçlandı.
Yöntem: Çalışmaya, yatarak tedavi gören, DSM-IV tanı ölçütlerine göre şizofreni tanısı alan ve akut alevlenme döneminde olan 45 hasta dahil edildi. Hastaya ait sosyodemografik ve klinik özellikler ile sigara içme davranışına ait bilgiler hazırlanan bir anket formuyla değerlendirildi. Sigara içme davranışına göre 3 gruba ayrılan hastalara tedavinin ilk ve 15. gününde Kısa Psikiyatrik Derecelendirme Ölçeği (KPDÖ), Ekstrapiramidal Semptomları Değerlendirme Ölçeği (ESDÖ) ve Barnes Akatizi Ölçeği uygulandı.
Bulgular: KPDÖ, Barnes ve diskinezi skorları açısından gruplar arasında farklılık saptanmazken, parkinsonizm skorları açısından gruplar arasında anlamlı farklılık bulundu.
Sonuç: Bulgular sigara içen şizofren hastalarda anti-psikotiğe bağlı parkinsonizmin daha az oranda görüldüğünü ortaya koyan literatür bilgisiyle uyumlu olmakla beraber, bu konuda daha büyük bir örneklem grubunda yapılacak çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.
