Animal behavioural models of depression cannot exactly stimulate human psychopathology, but they can be used to evaulate behavioural changes induced by drugs and to suggest hypothesis about the function of the central nervous system and its involvement in depression. Human depression cannot be induced in animals, so the models cannot be claimed to reproduce human psychopathology, but they are intended to induce changes that are sensitive to therapeutic agents, in a manner predictive of their effects in humans. This article summarizes th animal models of depression, their validity and the involvement of serotonin (5-HT) and other neurotransmitters to these models.

Depresyon oluşturmayı amaçlayan deneysel modeller, insan psikopatolojisinin açıklamada yeterli değildirler, ancak ilaç etkisiyle oluşan davranışsal değişiklikleri değerlendirme ve depresyon pategenezine yönelik teorileri geliştirmede ve santral sinir sisteminin fonksiyonlarını açıklamada önemli katkıları olmaktadır. Depresyonu insanlardaki şekliyle deney hayvanlarında oluşturmak olası değildir, bu modeller depresyon tedavisinde kullanılan ilaçlara, elde edilen davranış değişiklikleri doğrultusunda, oluşturdukları yanıtı ölçerek klinikde kullanımlarında, etkinlikleri açısından öngörüsel değer taşımaktadırlar.
